OCC Awards Announced
The 2016 Outer Critics Circle Awards were handed out last week. Bright Star, the original new musical with a score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, was named Outstanding New Broadway Musical, while The Humans was named Outstanding New Broadway Play. With four wins, She Loves Me earned the most OCC Awards of any single production including Outstanding Revival of a Musical. To see all the winners, click here.
Audra McDonald Taking Leave from Shuffle Along
Six-time Tony Award-winning actress Audra McDonald announced last week that she is taking a leave from the just-opened Shuffle Along as she is expecting her first child with her husband, actor Will Swenson. Her “temporary maternity leave” will begin 7/24. Grammy Award-winning singer Rhiannon Giddens will replace her in the lead female role of Lottie Gee. Lin-Manuel Miranda Upset About Pirates Filming Hamilton
Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda has had it with audience members who photograph and record his hit new musical on their cell phones. The multiple Tony nominee turned to Twitter last week after an unusual number of audience members were seen recording the hit show. He responds to people who say they worked hard to get the tickets and deserve to photograph it by saying, “I worked too hard to finish this show.” He also warned that he will send ushers out to make people erase pictures from their phones.
