The Lion King Live Action Film in the Works

  • Disney’s animated classic The Lion King is the latest movie to be reimagined as a live-action/CG project. Disney is reteaming with Jon Favreau, the filmmaker who brought to life The Jungle Book, for a 21st century take on the tale, which Disney has fast-tracked to production.  Disney’s recent live-action film remakes include Maleficent, Cinderella, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast in 2017. The Broadway production of The Lion King celebrated its 19th year on 11/13. For more on this story, click here.

King Charles III Adaptation to Air on PBS

  • Masterpiece will co-produce an adaptation of The Tony-nominated Broadway play King Charles III that imagines the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the ascension of her oldest son to the throne.  The movie will air on PBS in 2017.  Author Mike Bartlett will adapt his own play into a 90-minute film, with Rupert Goold set to direct.  Tim Pigott-Smith, who played the character on Broadway, will star as Charles. King Charles III was nominated for Best Play at the 2016 Tony Awards, and won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 2015. Click here for more on the adaptation.

Hamilton Star Leslie Odom Jr. Releases New Christmas Album

  • Leslie Odom Jr., who won the 2016 Tony Award as Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in Hamilton, released his new Christmas album on 11/11.  Titled Simply Christmas, the album include Odom Jr.’s jazz versions of Christmas tunes, including “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” “The Christmas Song,” “First Noel,” and more.
