The owner of a gypsy cab station is in danger of losing his business to urban renewal in the Broadway debut of August Wilson’s earliest play.

News and Notes:

La La Land Eyes Stage Adaptation

  • Last Sunday, the film La La Land won seven Golden Globes, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress, breaking the record of most wins by a single film. Now, the film might have the opportunity to come alive on the stage. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig told investors this past Tuesday that the studio eventually may mount a touring stage show. “If we want to do a stage show, we can do a stage show,” says Feig, pointing to Lionsgate’s Step Up franchise as a template for adapting a film for the stage. Sara Bareilles in Talks to Join Waitress Broadway Cast

  • Tony Award-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles says she may, at some point, assume the leading role of Jenna Hunterson in her own Broadway musical, Waitress, currently being played by fellow Tony nominee Jessie Mueller. But Bareilles said she needs to finish a new record album first. It wouldn’t be Bareilles’ first time singing Jenna’s role; she released a solo album of herself singing songs from the Tony-nominated score – What’s Inside: Songs From Waitress – in November 2015, about six months before the show opened on Broadway. Hillary Clinton Receives Ovation at The Color Purple

  • Hillary Clinton, who has kept a relatively low public profile since losing the presidential election two months ago, showed up at the final performance of the Broadway revival of The Color Purple on January 8th.  Mrs. Clinton, accompanied by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and their daughter, Chelsea, received several ovations from the sold-out audience as she arrived, and then another round of applause when she was acknowledged by the cast after the show.
