Broadway Reviews –  The Waverly Gallery

Kenneth Lonergan‘s The Waverly Gallery Reviews. Featuring Academy Award nominees Elaine May and Lucas Hedges, Tony Award winners Joan Allen and David Cromer, and, in his third Lonergan play, Tony nominee Michael Cera, the show officially opened on Broadway last week.  Critical response was mostly positive, though a few reviewers found the play lacking in emotional detail and the treatment of its subject matter dated:

Entertainment Weekly –  “[It] never quite builds to the emotional power of [Lonergan’s] most memorable work…its stakes are lower, its humor quieter, and its tragedies less piercing. That doesn’t make for the most propulsive drama onstage…”

Hollywood Reporter – “…the play’s inevitable limitation is that there’s only one direction it can go. In that sense it suffers slightly from the proliferation of dramas dealing with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia in the years since it was first produced, the majority of them centered on women.”

New York Magazine – “The play tells us that we should remember Gladys’s story, but doesn’t take advantage of the infinite potential of its form in the telling of it. Even in the sensitive hands of its actors, it’s an affecting play, but not a revelatory one.”

However, most critics lauded the talented and affecting acting ensemble (especially the performance of Elaine May), and Lila Neugebauer‘s assured direction:

New York Times – “Wonderful…under Neugebauer’s fine-tuned direction…May turns out to be just the star to nail the rhythms, the comedy and the pathos of a woman who’s talking as fast as she can to keep her place in an increasingly unfamiliar world.”

Deadline – “A vital comic drama that dares us to laugh before delivering the gut punch we know is coming….sensitively directed by Neugebauer. Performed by that first-rate cast, Lonergan’s play, at once loving and unsentimental, gives attention to that long, inevitable passage in a family’s life when the old slip away.”

New York Daily News – “Both one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever see in a Broadway theater and one of the most profoundly sad…”
