Stage Adaptation of the Animated Blockbuster
Disney presents Aladdin, the stage adaptation of its 1992 animated blockbuster, featuring the hit songs from the film as well as original songs written specifically for Broadway. The Disney film was inspired by centuries-old folktales including “One Thousand and One Nights,” was a huge hit in movie theaters and sold a record-breaking 25 million copies on VHS.
Aladdin was adapted for the stage by writer Chad Beguelin and eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken. Howard Ashman, who first pitched the idea for the film, wrote the lyrics for several songs, with additional lyrics by Tim Rice, who continued the work following Ashman’s passing in 1991. The Broadway production is directed by multiple Tony-winner Casey Nicholaw.
All-Star Broadway Talent
Adam Jacobs and Courtney Reed star as Aladdin and Jasmine, Jonathan Freeman appears as villain Jafar, reprising his voiceover role from the movie, and James Monroe Iglehart assumes the role of the wish-granting Genie, played so memorably in the film by the late Robin Williams. Iglehart’s show-stealing turn won him the 2014 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
