Fiddler on the Roof – A Broadway Tradition

Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway

A Musical Classic Returns to Broadway

Fiddler on the Roof is a new Broadway revival of Bock & Harnick’s classic musical about Tevye, a Jewish milkman in early 1900s Russia, who sees his three eldest daughters married, each one moving further from traditional ways, and must cope with the growing anti-Jewish sentiment in his country.  The story is based on the fictional memoir “Tevye and his Daughters,” a series of stories written by Sholem Aleichem.

From the Producers

This critically acclaimed Broadway revival features a sensational cast and orchestra that tell this heartwarming story of fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, and the timeless traditions that define faith and family. Featuring a classic Broadway score, including beloved songs such as “To Life (L’Chaim!)”, “If I Were A Rich Man”, “Sunrise, Sunset”, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker”, and “Tradition”, Fiddler on the Roof will introduce a new generation to this uplifting celebration that raises its cup to joy! To love! To life!

Cast & Creatives

The revival is helmed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher, whose production of The King and I won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.   Five-time Tony Award nominee Danny Burstein (“Cabaret,” “Golden Boy,” “South Pacific”) stars as dairyman Tevye.

The revival is based on the original conception and choreography of Jerome Robbins, who won a 1965 Tony Award for his direction and choreography of the musical.  Israeli-born artist Hofesh Shechter adapts Robbins’ choreography for the revival.  The music and lyrics are provided by Broadway legends Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, and the book is adapted by playwright Joseph Stein.

Original Show First to Surpass 3000 Performances

The original production opened in 1964 and made Broadway history by being the first musical to surpass 3,000 performances. “Fiddler” held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years. It remains Broadway’s sixteenth longest-running show in history.

Critic’s Review from the New York Times

Superb…[it] honors the show’s ebullience of spirit. As directed by Sher with his customary sensitivity, this multihued staging moves to a heart-stopping conclusion. The new choreography bears the unmistakable stamp of [Jerome] Robbins’s genius. The orchestra performs the score with sumptuous, idiomatic style.
